M41 Walker Bulldog Light Tank

The M41 was developed from the T37 series of light tank design that were to replace the Chaffee following World War II. While the M41 was highly manueverable, reasonably potent, simple to operate, and effective in combat, it also used fuel at an alarming rate and was extremely noisy. Its main gun was fully stabilised and very accurate for the time. Produced in the 1950愀 by Cadillac愀 Cleveland Tank Plant with first production models completed in 1951. By 1953 the M41 Bulldog had totally replaced the M24 Chaffee. The US did not use the M41 in combat in Vietnam but did provide a number of them to the South Vietnamese during 1965 as part of a massive re-equipment program. The M41 was highly effective against North Vietnamese T-54/55 tanks in the Vietnam war with its 76mm gun. However, in Vietnam the M41 suffered from being too light for most traditional battlefield support tasks and too heavy for most internal security tasks.

The AVDS series of engine, eventually used in the M60 Main Battle Tank, can trace their lineage back to the 1940's with the advent of the R670 Radial Aircraft Engine. The first engine bearing a resemblence to the M60's AVDS 1790 engines was the AOS 895 engine, produced for the army in the 1950's, and utilized in the M41 Tank and the M42A1 self propelled twin guns.

The M41 has been exported to Brazil (300), Chile (60), Denmark, Dominican Republic (12), Guatemala (10), Somalia (10), Taiwan (675), Thailand (200) and Tunisia (10). Many of these tanks remain in service around the world, thanks to updates that have included replacing the old gasoline engine with a new diesel powerpack (500 hp Cummins VTA-903T). The 76 mm gun is improved with a new type of high performance anti-tank round (APFSDS from AAI International). Other improvements includes an NBC system, thermal night vision system with integrated laser rangefinder (Ericsson Radio Systems), night vision periscope (Texas Instruments) as well as Halogen searchlight mounted on the gun mantlet

Taiwan's M41D life extension system upgrade includes a new, locally produced 76mm main gun, new diesel engine, thermal targeting system, digital ballistics computer and laser rangefinder, and reactive armor. However, the tank lacks stabilized sights and cannot fire on the move, and is relegated to scouting and counter-amphibious operations.

M41華克猛犬輕戰車為M24查飛的後繼車型，並大量軍援包括我國在內的美國盟國，我國海軍陸戰隊及陸軍目前仍使用該車。

Ｍ４１戰車係美國通用公司凱迪拉克廠於民國39年發展成功，為紀念韓戰中陣亡華克中將，故命名為華克猛犬戰車；此型戰車性能極為優越，尤以快速靈活的機動力及精準的火力，活躍於韓、越戰中。

我國於民國47年自美陸續接收此型裝備，配發裝甲部隊使用，40餘年來Ｍ４１戰車以其優異的性能擔負台澎金馬灘頭防衛，使敵不敢輕言犯台其功闕偉。

自二次大戰結束之後，美國陸軍即積極思考發展新一代輕戰車的計劃，以便接替二次大戰後期研發完成的Ｍ－２４”查飛”輕戰車，執行裝甲偵搜與戰車獵殺任務。

原本的Ｍ－２４輕戰車在二戰結束之後，繼續歷經了１９５０年韓戰的洗禮，但是面對俄製的Ｔ－３４／８５型中戰車（Ｔ－３４配備８５ｍｍ主砲構型）時，卻顯得不足以完全抗衡。

為了與Ｍ－２４輕戰車相比在火力－機動力－防護力等指標上有更長足的進步，美國開始了發展Ｍ－４１輕戰車的計劃。第一種配備有７６ｍｍ戰車砲，１２.７ｍｍ機槍與車長遙控７.６２ｍｍ機槍槍塔的輕戰車方案被稱為Ｔ－３７－Ｐｈａｓｅ１型，而後改良的Ｔ－３７－Ｐｈａｓｅ２型方案則改裝了新的砲塔，並增加焊接裝甲以及砲盾，加裝陀螺儀二維砲身穩定系統，對射控及彈藥儲存系統也做了改良。

最後的一個改良型為Ｔ－３７－Ｐｈａｓｅ３型先導實驗車型，裝有７６ｍｍ自動快砲與ＩＢＭ穩定系統。

被美國陸軍選上的是Ｔ－３７－Ｐｈａｓｅ２型方案，但取消了砲身穩定系統，改編號為Ｔ－４１型輕戰車，一共生產了３輛原型車。１９５０年中，Ｔ－４１型進一步被改良為Ｔ－４１Ｅ１型輕戰車，並在不久之後成為美軍正式採用的輕戰車，軍用編號為Ｍ－４１型輕戰車。

原本Ｍ－４１被稱為”小牛頭犬”（Little Bulldog）式輕戰車，而為了紀念在１９５１年於韓戰時在韓國陣亡的華克將軍（W W Walker），才將Ｍ－４１輕戰車改名為”華克猛犬”（Walker Bulldog）式輕戰車。

Ｍ－４１輕戰車於１９５１年間進入首批生產，在生產線轉為生產改良型的Ｍ－４１Ａ１之前，共生產了１８０２輛Ｍ－４１型輕戰車。但是其實Ｍ－４１輕戰車的幾種主要改良型，如Ａ１／Ａ２／Ａ３型，其差別都不大，僅止於小幅度的改良而已，如Ｍ－４１Ａ１與Ａ２型之間，其主要差別只有Ａ２型改用凱迪拉克公司所研發的砲塔與火砲控制系統。

在生產線關閉之前，Ｍ－４１系列輕戰車共計生產了５５００輛，曾有１９個國家使用過Ｍ－４１系列輕戰車。

Ｍ－４１的車身結構可分成前段駕駛艙，中段戰鬥艙及後段發動機艙，駕駛員便坐在車頭部位左側來駕駛，中段戰鬥艙及砲塔部分，Ｍ－４１的任務設計是執行裝甲偵蒐及戰車獵殺，因此在裝甲厚度上較厚，比同時期的法國ＡＭＸ－１３輕戰車及前蘇聯ＰＴ－７６輕戰車更厚上許多，車體依各部位不同，裝甲厚度從４５ｍｍ到１９ｍｍ不等。（美方資料）

Ｍ－４１使用了全焊式裝甲結構砲塔，車長及射手席位在砲塔右側，裝填手則位於左側。車長使用一具３６０度視野的Ｍ－２０Ａ１型潛望觀測鏡，射手則使用一具Ｍ－９７型瞄準鏡和一具Ｍ－２０Ａ１型潛望觀測鏡，

裝填手本身也有一具Ｍ－１３型潛望觀測鏡。砲塔後部為儲藏架，並有一部由駕駛控制的通風機。

Ｍ－４１裝置一門Ｍ－３２型７６ｍｍ戰車砲，可發射ＡＡＩ公司於１９８２年研發的”翼穩脫殼穿甲彈”（ＡＰＦＳＤＳ），以提高對抗敵方重裝甲目標的能力。

而後段發動機艙內Ｍ－４１使用一具萊康明ＡＯＳＩ－８９５－３型汽油發動機，最大出力５００ｈｐ，攜帶５３０Ｌ油料，與戰鬥艙部分由防火門隔開，並裝有由駕駛操作的滅火系統。

Ｍ－４１輕戰車的速度可以達到最高路速７２ｋｍ／１ｈ的優秀水準，也是目前台灣所有現役履帶型戰甲車中最快的。但因為是使用汽油機，也讓Ｍ－４１的續行里程只有１６１ｋｍ，但是基本上Ｍ－４１輕戰車依然是一個穩定且可靠的輕戰車。

Ｍ－４１輕戰車和之前的Ｍ－２４輕戰車一樣使用扭力桿式承載系統，車體兩側各有５具附橡膠外襯的路輪，以及３個迴帶輪，惰輪在前而驅動輪在後。第１－２－５具路輪上裝置有液壓式避震器。

中華民國陸軍於１９５８年開始接收第一批５５輛軍援之Ｍ－４１輕戰車，往後陸續大量接收，總數超過７００輛以上。由陸軍及海軍陸戰隊使用，在精實案之後，目前仍堪用的Ｍ－４１Ａ３則編組在陸軍各軍團，
裝甲／裝步／摩步旅裝騎連以及海軍陸戰隊陸戰旅中使用。

在堪用者通過車體金屬疲勞檢測後，有極少部分（約５０輛）被我國自行改良，型號為Ｍ－４１Ｄ型（另述），除部分置於本島進行人員訓練外，其餘均配屬金防部，編成一個輕戰車營擔任外島反登陸作戰及灘岸掃蕩任務。

中正理工學院曾將Ｍ－４１改裝為遙控戰車，但是僅止於實驗性質而未交付部隊使用，１９７５年我國更仿造Ｍ－４１輕戰車推出國造６４式輕戰車，據推測可能裝置有比Ｍ－４１更為先進的射控系統，但最終並未進入量產。

總而言之，總數超過７００輛的Ｍ－４１在台灣裝甲武力中佔有舉足輕重的地位，但是也已邁入”老年期”，未來如何填補這個戰力空隙則有待陸軍高層研究了。
