The GEN II is subdivided into fundamental types. The first (Type), has evolved from the United States Marine Corps (USMC) Light Armor Vehicles. The second (Type II), from the Canadian Armed Forces "Bisons" armored vehicles. The Type I chassis have been primarily used for the combat and combat support roles and the Type II for the combat support and combat service support roles. The LAV-25 is the baseline vehicle for the Type I and the LAV-PC is the Type II baseline.

Both Type I and Type II incorporates subsystems which are common to the FOLAV fleet. The power plant is a Detroit Diesel 6V53T diesel engine developing 275 horsepower coupled to an Allison MT653, 6 speed (5 forward, 1 reverse) automatic transmission with driver-select gear ranges. Power is delivered through a single transfer case to 4 differentials. The four rear wheels drive the vehicle on a full-time basis, but eight-wheel drive is selectable.

The GEN II has been designed and equipped with the capability, mobility, agility, and flexibility for operations in hot dry, hot humid, mild cold to cold climatic conditions and on highways, off road, cross-country, level and hilly unimproved roads, and urban environments. Its low silhouette makes it a difficult target to detect and destroy.

The GEN III configurations are newly designed LAVs from ground up. The chassis is longer and wider than the baseline vehicle. Higher capacity Power Pack, Driveline and Suspension have been introduced to provide more load carrying capacity.

The program objective of the LAV Service Life Extension Program (SLEP is to extend the service life of the LAV Family Of Vehicles to 2015 by:

Improving survivability, sustainability, lethality, and mobility
Improving the readiness of the LAV FOV and,
Reducing Fleet Operation and Sustainment (O&S) costs

The SLEP is an Acquisition Category III. Milestone 0 was completed on 23 October 1997, MS I was completed on 02 February 1999, and MS II is expected to be accomplished in 2nd Quarter FY 00. The Operational Requirements Document (ORD) Change 2 was approved in March 1998.

The SLEP will include all LAVs in the USMC inventory. Formal studies have concluded that the LAV structural integrity is sustainable at least through 2015. However, O&S cost driver studies indicate supportability costs are growing at an alarming rate. Many of LAV readiness issues are being/can be corrected by IROAN (Inspect/Replace Only As Necessary) and modernization through spares. IROAN efforts will be required during the SLEP production phase and will focus on core depot capabilities. SLEP changes to LAV subsystems will improve survivability and sustainability. Additionally, environmental, safety, and health issues will also be addressed.

The LAV-25 is an all-terrain, all-weather vehicle with night capabilities. It provides strategic mobility to reach and engage the threat, tactical mobility for effective use of fire power, fire power to defeat soft and armored targets, and battlefield survivability to carry out combat missions. It is air transportable via C-130, C-141, C-5 and CH-53 E. When combat loaded there are 210 ready rounds and 420 stowed rounds of 25 mm ammunition as well as 400 ready rounds and 1200 stowed rounds of 7.62mm. There are 8 ready rounds and 8 stowed rounds of smoke grenades. A supplementary M240E1 7.62mm machine gun can be pintle-mounted at the commander's station in the turret. LAV-25輪式裝甲車：裝甲鋼焊接結構

LAV-25輪式裝甲車車體炮塔均採用裝甲鋼焊接結構，正面能防7.62mm穿甲彈，其他部位能防7.62mm殺傷彈和炮彈破片。駕駛員位於車體前部左側，炮塔居中，內有車長與炮手的位置，載員艙在車體後部。

該車採用德爾科(Delco)公司的雙人炮塔，裝有1門麥克唐納·道格拉斯直升機公司的25mm鏈式炮。輔助武器有7.62mm的M240並列機槍和M60機槍各1挺。炮塔兩側各有1組M257煙幕彈發射器，每組4具。主炮有雙向穩定，便於越野時行進間射擊。

該車行動部分的特點是兩個前橋採用獨立彈簧懸掛，兩個後橋採用獨立扭桿懸掛。車輪採用洩氣保用輪胎，有中央充氣調壓系統。該車具有浮渡能力，水上行駛時靠2台噴水推進器推進，車首有防浪板。

The light armored vehicle (air defense variant) consists of what equates to an Avenger turret mounted on the chassis of a light armored vehicle (LAV)-25. Its primary mission is to provide low altitude air defense against forces from airborne threats by fixed and rotary winged aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles capable of speeds of zero to 500 NMPH, at ranges within the envelope of the Stinger Missiles and the 25mm ammunition. A secondary mission is to provide ground defense against light armored mechanized forces.

The Blazer turret includes a forward-looking infrared targeting sight, a laser rangefinder, and the option of employing either Stinger missiles or the rapid-fire GAU-12/U 25mm Gatling gun. The system maintains all the capabilities of the LAV-25 and Avenger with subtle differences. The turret is modified to fit the light armored vehicle and does not have the large crew space of Avenger. The crew compartment inside the light armored vehicle allows two operators with separate windows in the turret to search and scan the air from inside the vehicle.

The turret can slew 360° and has the same standard vehicle-mounted launcher configuration as Avenger. The .50 caliber machine gun was replaced by a 20 millimeter chain gun that provides antiair capabil-ity against aircraft within the inner launch boundary of a Stinger and a significant ground target engagement capability. Each standard vehicle-mounted launcher carries four Stinger missiles that can be fired in rapid succession. The LAV-AD can shoot on the move at speeds up to 30 miles per hour and can operate as an amphibious vehicle. The crew consists of a vehicle commander, two Stinger gunners, and a driver. The crew can communicate within the vehicle by intercom and externally via HF, VHF/FM, and UHF communications nets. The LAV-AD SINC-GARS radio suite is similar to the Avenger’s radio suite and allows for the integration of the remote terminal unit and ground-based data link.

Although the LAV-AD is not an organic weapon system to the Marine aircraft wing, it is important to be aware of its associated organization, configuration, and operating characteristics. Stinger gunners and other Marines with Stinger backgrounds could be assigned to the light armored reconnaissance battalion to employ the LAV-AD. Although the tactics, techniques, and procedures associated with LAV-AD operations are still under development, it is likely the LAV-AD will be used in much the same manner as an Avenger-equipped LAAD unit in direct support of a maneuver element. The current concept of employment states that the primary mission of the LAV-AD is to provide local air defense for the light armored reconnaissance battalion, operating well forward of the fire support coordination line. It also outlines the planned table of organization that calls for an antiair warfare officer to command the LAV-AD company and Stinger staff noncommissioned officers and gunners to serve as crewmembers.

General Dynamics began delivering the new LAV-AD to Marine light armor units in the fall of 1997. The Marines are buying 17 of these systems for their extensive LAV fleet.

LAV(AD)防空車

　　為滿足美國空軍對機動防空武器系統的需要，加拿大通用汽車公司利用LAV(8×8)底盤改培訓通用電氣(General Electric)公司的炮塔，炮塔上有1六30mm的卡特林(Catling)4管機關炮，通過試驗雖獲成功，但由於美國陸軍同意接受擔任防守空軍基地的任務，故空軍放棄此方案。1987年5月，美國陸軍坦克機動車輛局向75家公司招標，要求發展一種輕型裝甲防空車，然而只有食品機械化學公司(FMC)和通用電氣公司兩家公司投標。

　　1987年12月，美國陸軍與上述兩家公司簽訂了合同，製造4輛樣車的總金額為3132萬美元。兩家公司均採用海軍陸戰隊提供的LAV(8×8)的底盤各製造2輛。1988財政年度第三季度開始第二階段研製試驗，該試驗要求於1989年財政年度完成，1989制裁政年度第四季度再進行第二階段使用試驗。

This vehicle provides mobile, armored, accurate and destructive fire from defiled positions against heavy armored target and fixed fortifications. With its mobility, it can keep pace with it's applicable assigned military unit to provide highly mobile, protected anti-armor fire support to light infantry and reconnaissance forces, and to provide a capability to defeat heavy, armored targets at long ranges. The vehicle can be used in both the defensive and offensive roles. Its primary weapon station is the Emerson turret. When combat loaded there are 2 ready and 14 stowed TOW II ATGMs as well as 200 ready rounds and 800 stowed rounds of 7.62mm ammunition. There are 8 ready rounds and 8 stowed rounds of smoke grenades. The missiles can be loaded under armor. The vehicle can be made fully amphibious within 3 minutes.

The LAV 105MM (Gen III)(LAV-105) configuratuion is a Foreign Military Sales item for use in a Combat Support Company Assault Gun Platoon, which conducts direct fire against personnel, fortifications, vehicles and aircraft. The GEN III configurations are newly designed LAVs from ground up. The chassis is longer and wider than the baseline vehicle. Higher capacity Power Pack, Driveline and Suspension have been introduced to provide more load carrying capacity.
