Think of it this way: He performed his very best during the test.

pursuit is a regular actively , such as a hobby
If he pursuit on something it means that he insists on doing it.

record is an unmatched measurement
A record is like a sheet of paper to write down scores, therefore it is somewhat like a measurement.
