Green Day樂隊是90年代之後美國朋克音樂復興時期的重要樂隊之一，他們的成員深受70年代朋克音樂時期經典樂隊影響，而簡明上口的流暢旋律讓他們的音樂更便於流行。在1994年涅磐王朝(Nirvana)崩塌之後，朋克音樂復興與另類流行搖滾樂當道的時候，Green Day樂隊也一躍成為了這股風潮的中流砥柱，成為了90年代以後最受歡迎的搖滾樂隊之一，也是美國流行樂朋克復興中最有影響的樂隊之一。

　　1988年，只有14歲的吉他手兼歌手Billie Joe Armstrong與同齡的兒時夥伴，貝司手Mike Dirnt聯手在美國加利福尼亞州西北部首先組建了Green Day的前身Sweet Children樂隊，1989年當鼓手Al Sobrante加入之後正式更名為Green Day。成軍之後通過發行一些EP專輯，進入90年代的Green Day在加州北方的地下朋克圈內名聲鵲起，隨即加盟了加州當地的獨立唱片公司Lookout!。隨著該公司老總Larry Livermore的推廣，Green Day樂隊已經成為了加州地下的名角。1991年，Green Day樂隊還發行了樂隊首張專輯《1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hour》，但是在這張專輯發行之後，Green Day樂隊就遭遇了人員動盪，Al Sobrante離隊，Tre Cool替代了他的鼓手位置。樂隊陣容從此穩定了下來，Tre Cool原名Frank Edwin Wright，貝司手Mike Dirnt原名Mike Pritchard。不過此後一段時間Green Day一直沒有太大突破，直到1992年發行了專輯《Kerplunk》，這張專輯在加州地下樂壇反響頗佳引起了主流唱片公司的關注，Reprise公司最終和他們簽約。

　　加盟Reprise公司之後，1994年初，Green Day樂隊發行了第三張專輯，也是他們主流公司的首張專輯《Dookie》。由於單曲《Longview》和第二支單曲《Basket Case》的連續推動，這張專輯成為了整個1994年的一個現象，兩首單曲全部都成為了現代搖滾單曲榜的冠軍，而此後在大名鼎鼎的Woodstock音樂節上的精彩演出，以及第三首冠軍單曲《When I Come Around》推出之後，Green Day樂隊的這張《Dookie》風靡美國，繼而蔓延全球。三首冠軍單曲統治現代搖滾單曲榜冠軍累計十多周的時間，專輯的銷量節節攀升，這張曾經雄踞 Billboard 200排行榜亞軍的專輯最終在美國地區取得了超過800萬張的銷量，全球銷量超過千萬張，並且為他們帶來了1994年度第37屆格萊美獎最佳另類音樂表演獎。《Dookie》的暢銷讓朋克音樂鋒芒畢露，重新成為了後Grunge時代搖滾樂領域重要的組成部分，而Green Day被認為是美國流行樂壇朋克復興時期的先鋒，成為了美國朋克復興樂隊中最主要的代表之一，影響了後來一系列流行朋克樂隊。

　　在《Dookie》的輝煌過後不久，1995年Green Day樂隊發行了第四張專輯《Insomniac》，這張專輯發行後也站在了Billboard 200排行榜亞軍，並且也有單曲《J.A.R.》成為現代搖滾單曲榜冠軍，到1996年的時候這張專輯的總銷量卻沒能超越《Dookie》，總銷量只有 200萬張。此後疲憊的Green Day樂隊取消了歐洲巡演，休養並錄製了第五張專輯《Nimrod》並于1997年發行，這張專輯在排行榜上只名列第十位。此後經過了長達三年的等待之後，2000年發行了第六張專輯，也是他們在主流唱片公司的第四張專輯《Warning》，這張專輯這張專輯在發行之後以15萬6千張的銷量名列排行榜的第四位，銷量再次突破百萬張。《Warning》之後又經歷了長達四年的時光消耗，2004年9月21日Green Day樂隊發行了他們主流唱片公司的第五張專輯《American Idiot》，再次引發了轟動
