personally.....i reckon that saying "happy new year" during x'mas time is a bit too soon......although it's only a 7-day difference...
also.....it's very obvious that artifact is joking when he/she puts in "*laugh*' at the end......unless someone couldn't identify it.....or does putting in "XD" end make it easier to recognise?

people like to say happy new years in christmas time because it ties together. Since it is only a week away people like to say Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
And even if it's a joke, some people are easily confused, so it's better to let them know the correct way first, then joke about it. (I have seen people learn from jokes and use it)

Yep, I was thinking the same way, as I saw that you've given the correct answer in the first reply. I was just too excited when I came up with the weird idea Marry-Crisp-Must and forgot to mentioned that this is wrong *slap*
