Animal Farm （ 動 物 農 莊 ） 第 四 章 說 ： When the other animals came back from looking for her, it was to find that the stable-lad, who in fact was only stunned, had already recovered and made off （ 其 他 動 物 尋 找 莫 莉 之 後 回 到 院 子  ， 這 才 發 覺 那 馬 童 已 經 醒 來 ， 溜 走 了 。 他 原 來 只 是 昏 了 過 去 ） 。 作 者 為 甚 麼 說 it was to find 而 不 說 it was found ？


《 動 物 農 莊 》 這 段 文 字 ， 見 於 人 畜 大 戰 之 後 。 英 文 常 在 動 詞 後 面 用 「 to + 原 形 動 詞 （ infinitive ） 」 ， 表 示 發 覺 或 經 歷 一 些 事 情 。 你 還 會 看 到 「 only to + 原 形 動 詞 」 這 語 法 ， 表 示 發 覺 或 經 歷 一 些 意 外 或 不 如 意 的 事 ， to 字 有 「 （ 某 些 事 ） 這 時 才 發 覺 」 含 義 ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） He emerged from the house to find hundreds of fans waiting for him （ 他 從 房 子  走 出 來 ， 發 覺 有 好 幾 百 仰 慕 者 在 等 候 他 ） 。 （ 2 ） We arrived at the station only to see the train pulling out （ 我 們 來 到 車 站 ， 只 見 火 車 正 在 開 出 ） 。


《 動 物 農 莊 》 那 一 句 ， 改 為 it was found that 文 法 上 是 可 以 的 ， 但 「 這 才 發 覺 」 的 含 義 則 沒 有 了 。


God bless you 、 God knows 二 語 ， 動 詞 為 甚 麼 一 不 加 es ， 另 一 句 卻 加 s ？
God bless you （ 願 上 帝 祝 福 你 ） 、 God save the Queen （ 天 佑 女 王 ） 等 ， 都 可 以 說 是 祈 使 句 （ imperative ） ， 和 Everybody stop talking ! （ 你 們 肅 靜 ！ ） 、 You come here / Come here （ 你 來 這  ） 等 一 樣 ， 動 詞 用 原 形 。 God knows 卻 不 是 祈 使 句 ， 意 思 是 「 上 帝 才 曉 得 」 和 Everybody knows （ 人 人 都 知 道 ） 一 樣 ， 是 一 般 句 子 ， 動 詞 自 然 要 加 s 。

羅 斯 福 說 ： 「 請 問 這 位 先 生 為 甚 麼 支 持 民 主 黨 ？ 」 「 我 祖 父 是 民 主 黨 ， 父 親 也 是 。 」
羅 斯 福 乘 虛 而 入 說 ： 「 朋 友 ， 假 如 你 祖 父 是  瓜 ， 父 親 也 是 ， 那 麼 ， 你 是 甚 麼 ？ 」
可 惜 他 未 能 得 逞 。 那 人 毫 不 猶 豫 回 答 說 ： 「 我 會 是 共 和 黨 。 」


【 解 說 】 提 峨 多 ． 羅 斯 福 是 美 國 第 二 十 六 任 總 統 （ 1901-09 ） 。 Move in / close in / go for the kill 這 句 成 語 ， 直 譯 是 「 迫 近 對 方 予 以 致 命 一 擊 」 ， 意 思 是 「 毫 不 留 情 出 手 攻 擊 」 ， 例 如 ： Whenever the terrorists see an opportunity, they go for the kill （ 恐 怖 分 子 一 見 到 機 會 ， 就 下 殺 手 ） 。


在 人 家 演 講 時 叫 嚷 起 哄 ， 英 文 叫 heckle ， 例 如 ： Roosevelt was heckled by a man in the audience （ 聽 眾 中 有 一 人 在 羅 斯 福 演 講 時 起 哄 ） 。 這 樣 起 哄 的 人 叫 heckler ， 例 如 ： The speaker turned a deaf ear to the hecklers （ 演 講 者 不 理 會 起 哄 的 人 說 甚 麼 ） 。

In 1962, when working for Reuters, Frederick Forsyth was posted to East Berlin where he nearly started the Third World War. Returning home late one night he found the road crowded with Soviet armoured divisions; tanks, rocket launchers, motorised infantry, rumbling along in the deep dead of night. He hurriedly filed a story that a Soviet assault on West Berlin was imminent.
The British prime minister and the US president had to be woken up, and NATO was put on red alert. Then a wise old hand at Reuters in London suggested he check if it was a rehearsal for the May Day parade. It was.

英 國 首 相 和 美 國 總 統 都 被 屬 員 叫 醒 了 。 北 約 實 行 緊 急 戒 備 。 這 時 倫 敦 路 透 社 一 位 資 深 識 廣 的 記 者 建 議 福 賽 思 看 看 那 是 不 是 五 一 勞 動 節 閱 兵 演 習 。 他 猜 對 了 。


【 解 說 】 福 賽 思 是 英 國 作 家 ， 作 品 包 括 The Day of the Jackal 。 In the dead of night 是 「 在 深 夜 」 ， 另 一 類 似 說 法 是 in the dead of winter （ 在 隆 冬 ） 。 兩 個 說 法 都 以 dead 帶 出 「 死 寂 」 含 義 。 You are safe from snakes in the dead of winter 即 「 隆 冬 就 不 必 怕 蛇 」 。 File 指 「 （ 記 者 ） 發 出 （ 報 道 ） 」 ， 例 如 ： She filed a report of the accident （ 她 發 出 了 意 外 事 故 的 報 道 ） 。

「 呵 癢 」 、 「 我 怕 被 人 呵 癢 」 英 文 怎 麼 說 ？


「 呵 癢 」 是 tickle ， 引 伸 其 義 ， 也 可 解 作 「 逗 笑 」 ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） I tickled the little boy under the arms （ 我 伸 手 到 那 小 男 孩 腋 窩  呵 癢 ） 。 （ 2 ） My joke tickled the children （ 我 說 笑 話 ， 把 孩 子 都 逗 笑 了 ） 。
「 怕 被 呵 癢 」 可 以 譯 做 ticklish ， 例 如 ： The most ticklish spots are the armpits and the soles of the feet （ 腋 窩 、 腳 掌 是 最 怕 呵 癢 的 地 方 ） 。 「 我 怕 被 人 呵 癢 」 英 文 就 是 I am very ticklish 。


「 遣 返 非 法 入 境 者 」 英 文 怎 樣 說 ？


英 文 patri 有 「 祖 國 」 的 意 思 ， 所 以 patriot 是 「 愛 國 者 」 ， compatriot 是 「 同 國 人 」 ； expatriate 以 ex （ 「 外 」 、 「 出 」 ） 加 上 patriate ， 是 「 寓 居 外 國 者 」 ； 此 外 還 有 repatriate ， 以 re （ 「 返 回 」 ， 如 return 即 「 歸 還 」 、 recall 即 「 召 回 」 ） 加 上 patriate ， 是 「 遣 回 原 國 」 。


「 遣 返 非 法 入 境 者 」 可 譯 做 to repatriate illegal immigrants 。 The government's established policy is to repatriate all illegal immigrants 即 「 政 府 既 定 的 政 策 ， 是 把 非 法 入 境 者 全 部 遣 回 原 國 」 。


「 按 本 子 辦 事 」 英 文 怎 麼 說 ？


「 按 本 子 辦 事 」 即 do something by the book 。 Book 是 書 本 ； 我 們 辦 事 ， 按 照 書 本 所 載 方 法 ， 往 往 就 不 會 有 差 池 。 例 如 ： Are you suggesting that, whatever the circumstances, we should always go by the book? （ 你 是 不 是 說 ， 在 任 何 情 況 之 下 ， 我 們 都 必 須 照 本 子 辦 事 ？ ）

嗚 呼 哀 哉 「 國 家 隊 」

「 國 家 隊 」 英 文 是 甚 麼 ？


英 文 沒 有 「 國 家 隊 」 這 個 古 怪 說 法 。 中 文 其 實 也 沒 有 ， 只 是 一 九 九 七 年 香 港 易 手 之 後 ， 香 港 傳 媒 硬 把 「 中 國 隊 」 、 「 中 國 總 理 」 等 傳 統 說 法 改 為 「 國 家 隊 」 、 「 國 家 總 理 」 之 類 ， 表 示 承 認 新 中 國 是 他 們 的 「 國 家 」 。 那 是 政 治 ， 不 是 中 文 。 這  隨 便 舉 一 個 例 ： 清 朝 乾 隆 年 間 ， 英 國 遣 使 來 華 ， 時 人 就 有 「 中 國 官 吏 循 例 予 以 旗 章 」 的 記 載 （ 《 清 朝 野 史 大 觀 》 卷 三 ） 。 中 文 不 會 說 「 國 家 官 吏 循 例 」 云 云 。  


英 美 國 民 不 會 叫 他 們 國 家 的 球 隊 做 national team 。 英 國 由 幾 個 民 族 （ nation ） 組 成 ， 假 如 把 英 國 隊 稱 為 the national team ， 這 個 team 是 代 表 哪 個 nation ？ 中 國 有 漢 、 滿 、 蒙 、 回 、 藏 五 大 民 族 ， 假 如 把 「 國 家 隊 」 譯 做 national team ， 就 比 「 國 家 隊 」 更 加 不 知 所 謂 。


英 國 人 一 般 會 把 英 格 蘭 隊 、 威 爾 斯 隊 、 蘇 格 蘭 隊 等 稱 為 the England team 、 the Welsh team 、 the Scotland team ， 而 稱 英 國 隊 為 the British team 。 美 國 人 則 會 稱 他 們 的 球 隊 做 the US team 或 the American team 。 這 當 然 不 是 說 他 們 不 承 認 英 國 、 美 國 是 他 們 的 國 家 。 他 們 只 是 不 以 「 國 家 」 為 圖 騰 ， 不 把 語 言 當 做 政 治 工 具 。


月 前 有 電 視 台 記 者 以 「 香 港 中 文 程 度 衰 落 」 的 問 題 相 詢 。 我 說 ： 「 這 問 題 ， 我 不 宜 談 ； 假 如 談 ， 不 能 不 談 政 治 ， 那 不 是 貴 台 所 樂 聞 的 。 」 他 知 難 而 退 。 我 希 望 他 還 知 道 ： 不 談 政 治 ， 他 的 「 提 高 中 文 程 度 」 專 輯 拍 了 不 如 不 拍 。

During the siege of Leningrad in 1941-44, the Russian defenders were reduced to living at a level hardly better than animals. Cannibalism became a reality rather than just a possibility. Patties made from minced human flesh were on sale at the Leningrad Haymarket. Many bodies brought to the frozen cemeteries for burial were found to have the fleshy parts removed from upper arms, thighs and buttocks. Sometimes only the heads were left behind. Soviet authorities were absolutely silent about this aspect of the siege.  



一 九 四 一 至 四 四 年 列 寧 格 勒 圍 城 戰 期 間 ， 守 城 俄 國 軍 民 的 生 活 水 準 低 得 幾 乎 和 動 物 無 異 。 人 吃 人 不 只 是 可 能 ， 而 且 是 事 實 。 列 寧 格 勒 秣 市 場 上 出 售 的 小 餡 餅 ， 就 是 以 碎 人 肉 作 餡 。 不 少 屍 體 送 到 冰 封 的 墓 地 前 ， 雙 臂 、 大 腿 、 臀 部 肌 肉 都 已 削 去 ， 有 時 只 剩 下 頭 顱 。 蘇 聯 當 局 對 圍 城 戰 的 這 一 面 隻 字 不 提 。


【 解 說 】 列 寧 格 勒 一 九 四 一 年 九 月 至 四 四 年 一 月 遭 德 軍 圍 攻 ， 死 亡 人 數 將 近 百 萬 ， 獲 蘇 共 封 為 「 英 雄 城 市 」 （ Hero City ） 。 英 雄 在 共 產 國 家 特 別 多 ， 性 命 也 特 別 便 宜 。


上 面 那 段 英 文 有 兩 個 字 可 以 談 談 ： reduce 和 cannibal 。 Reduce 是 「 減 少 」 ， 引 伸 其 義 ， 就 是 「 使 淪 落 」 或 「 貶 低 」 ， 例 如 ： The once wealthy family is now reduced to poverty （ 那 個 家 庭 曾 經 很 富 有 ， 但 現 在 已 淪 為 貧 家 ） 。 Cannibal 是 「 吃 人 肉 的 人 」 或 「 吃 同 類 果 腹 的 動 物 」 ， 例 如 ： The shipwrecked sailors had to become cannibals to stay alive （ 遇 上 船 難 的 水 手 為 了 活 下 去 ， 只 有 吃 人 ） 。

During the American Civil War, a young Federal soldier was hit by a shot that carried his genitals away. The bullet then passed through the wooden wall of a cabin and hit a pretty 17-year-old girl. It lodged in her groin and was later removed by the doctor.

To everyone's astonishment the girl proved to be pregnant three months later, even though she was a virgin. The doctor, who had also treated the young soldier, was able to reconstruct a picture of what had happened. The story was rounded off with a happy ending when the two young people were brought together in marriage not long after the birth of their first and, necessarily, only child.

令 人 驚 訝 的 是 ， 那 女 郎 雖 然 還 是 處 子 ， 三 個 月 後 卻 發 覺 懷 孕 了 。 女 郎 的 醫 生 也 是 那 年 輕 人 的 醫 生 ， 他 想 了 想 ， 明 白 了 事 情 的 來 龍 去 脈 。 這 故 事 圓 滿 收 場 ： 兩 個 年 輕 人 在 他 們 的 第 一 個 孩 子 出 生 後 不 久 ， 就 結 為 夫 婦 ， 只 是 當 然 不 可 能 再 生 育 了 。


【 解 說 】 留 意 necessarily 和 necessary 不 同 。 Necessary 是 形 容 詞 （ adjective ） ， 指 「 必 需 的 」 ； necessarily 是 副 詞 （ adverb ） ， 意 思 是 「 必 然 」 ， 多 用 於 否 定 句 子 ， not necessarily 即 「 未 必 」 。 請 比 較 以 下 兩 句 ： （ 1 ） All this preparation is not necessary （ 這 一 切 預 備 是 不 必 要 的 ） 。 （ 2 ） All this preparation is not necessarily useful （ 這 一 切 預 備 未 必 有 用 的 ） 。
