During World War II, Brigadier General Theodore Roosevelt, Jr, was waiting at an airport for a plane. A sailor stepped to a ticket window and asked for a seat on the same plane, explaining, "I want to see my mother; I haven't much time."


The indifferent person at the ticket window was not impressed. "There's a war on, you know," she replied.


At this point Roosevelt, who had overheard the conversation, stepped to the window and told her to give the sailor his seat. A friend said, "Teddy, aren't you in a hurry, too."


"It's a matter of rank,"came the reply. "I'm only a general; he's a son."

羅 斯 福 回 答 說 ： 「 這 是 身 份 問 題 。 我 只 是 個 將 軍 ， 他 卻 是 個 兒 子 。 」


【 附 注 】 Indifferent 是 「 漠 不 關 心 」 ， 切 勿 以 為 是 different （ 不 同 ） 的 反 義 詞 ， 例 如 ： The communist government is totally indifferent to the miseries of the people （ 共 產 黨 政 府 對 民 間 疾 苦 完 全 漠 不 關 心 ） 。

探險家瑪利威瑟‧路易斯（Meriwether Lewis）出生
1774年8月14日

Have you ever wondered who first discovered the place where you live? Back in the days when the country was largely unpopulated, explorers used to travel across the land finding new areas where people could settle. One famous explorer is Meriwether Lewis. Born on August 18, 1774, near Charlottesville, Virginia,
Lewis was known for teaming with William Clark and blazing a trail across the country to the Pacific Ocean.


Lewis grew up in the woods near Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's home, and when Jefferson became president in 1801, Lewis became his private secretary. Two years later Jefferson asked Lewis to lead an exploration of the Louisiana Purchase--the large piece of land that the U.S. acquired from France in 1803.


Together, Lewis and Clark kept a detailed journal of their three-year expedition. They crossed the country traveling through North Dakota, Montana, and Washington before returning to St. Louis, Missouri, in 1806. Their journals, published in 1809, created much excitement about the unknown area and helped Easterners get over their fears of traveling west beyond the Mississippi. 你有沒有想過是誰發現你現在居住的地方？回到過去的時光，當我們的國家人口還不是很多的時候，探險家們往往橫越大陸，試圖找尋適合人們居住的新領地。其中有一位有名的探險家就是瑪利威瑟‧路易斯。西元1774年8月18日，路易斯出生在維吉尼亞州的夏洛特斯維爾（Charlottesville）和他的伙伴威廉‧克拉克（William Clark）是有名的探險搭檔。他們共同橫越美國到了太平洋。

路易斯是在蒙地舍羅（Monticello）附近長大的，那也是湯瑪斯‧傑佛遜的故鄉。當傑佛遜在1801年成為美國總統的時候，路易斯是他的私人秘書。兩年之後，傑佛遜要求路易斯率領一組人勘察「路易斯安那購買合約」所取得的土地（Louisiana Purchase）—這是美國在1803年從法國取得最大的一塊土地。

為 甚 麼 上 市 場 ？


Greek philosopher Socrates lived a frugal life. One of his friends, well aware of this fact, was surprised to find him in the marketplace one day carefully examining some of the more luxurious wares on display. He asked the philosopher why he bothered to come to the market when he never bought anything.

"I am always amazed to see," Socrates replied, "just how many things there are that I don't need."

【 解 說 】 Bothered 是 「 費 事 」 或 「 費 神 」 ， 其 後 可 用 「 to + 原 形 動 詞 （ infinitive ） 」 ， 也 可 用 ing 形 式 動 詞 ， 意 思 沒 有 分 別 ， 例 如 ： Don't bother to come / coming with me in this heat, I know the way to the station very well （ 天 氣 這 麼 熱 ， 你 不 要 和 我 同 行 了 。 我 很 清 楚 怎 樣 去 車 站 ） 。


不 過 ， 有 些 字 之 後 ， 用 ing 形 式 動 詞 或 「 to + 原 形 動 詞 」 ， 意 思 會 有 不 同 。 例 如 ： （ 1 ） I tried going without lunch （ 我 試 用 「 不 吃 午 餐 」 的 方 法 ） 。 （ 2 ） I tried to go without lunch （ 我 嘗 試 不 吃 午 餐 ） 。 （ 3 ） I remembered shutting the window （ 我 記 得 當 時 把 窗 關 上 了 ） 。 （ 4 ） I remembered to shut the window （ 我 記 得 要 把 窗 關 上 ） 。

大陸會議正式批准巴黎條約
1784年1月14日

When did the Revolutionary War officially come to an end? On September 3, 1783, more than a year after the last shots were fired, a peace treaty was drawn up in Paris. Under the terms of the treaty, the United States was granted territory as far west as the Mississippi River.

After the Treaty of Paris was signed, it was sent to the Continental Congress. The United States had six months to ratify (approve) the document and return it to England. With the journey requiring approximately two months, the treaty needed to be on its way back to England by January. The valuable document almost did not arrive in time.

A ratifying convention was scheduled at the Maryland State House in November, but many of the delegates did not arrive right away. By January 12, only seven of the 13 states had sent their representatives. Time was running short; where were the other delegates?

Operating under the weak Articles of Confederation, the Continental Congress lacked the power to enforce attendance at the convention. On January 13, the convention needed one more delegate. Finally, South Carolina Representative Richard Beresford, who was ill, traveled to Maryland. As soon as he arrived, the vote was taken, and on January 14, 1784, the treaty was ratified. The United States was officially an independent nation.


美國獨立戰爭什麼時候正式結束呢？在1783年9月3日，戰場上的最後一聲槍響後的一年多之後，兩國才在巴黎簽訂了和平條約。在條約的規定下，美國得到了密西西比河以東的所有土地。

巴黎條約在簽訂之後，被送到大陸會議進行討論與審查。美國有六個月的時間來批准這項文件，然後再交給英國。由於來往傳遞時間大約需要兩個月，所以條約最遲必須在一月的時候就要送交給英國。這項珍貴的文件當時幾乎就要來不及到達了。

該年11月時，美國決定在馬里蘭州市政廳召開批准會議，但是許多代表卻無法及時到達。到了1月12日，13個州裡只有7個州派遣代表出席。時間已經不夠了，其他州的代表都在哪裡呢？

由於邦聯條款的鬆散約束力，大陸會議沒有足夠的權力來強制要求各州代表參加會議。到了1月13日，批准會議還需要更多的代表才能開會。最後，南卡羅萊納州的代表李察‧布瑞司福德（Richard Beresford）抱病前來參加會議。當他到達會場時，就立即開始投票。在1784年1月14日，條約被批准通過。美國正式成為獨立的國家。

國 王 之 死


Seeking to protect himself against assassination, Mithradates, king of Pontus and enemy of Rome, began to swallow various poisons, systematically increasing the doses until he was consuming quantities which would kill a horse.
Ironically, when he was defeated and cornered by the Roman army led by Pompey in 63 BC, he tried to commit suicide using poison and quickly realised that it was having no effect. He had to enlist a slave to kill him with a sword.

【 解 說 】 本 都 王 國 位 在 小 亞 細 亞 以 北 ， 公 元 前 一 二 ○ 年 至 六 十 三 年 ， 在 米 特 拉 達 梯 統 治 下 ， 國 力 頗 盛 ， 稱 雄 小 亞 細 亞 。 米 特 拉 達 梯 為 了 擴 張 勢 力 ， 三 次 和 羅 馬 戰 爭 ， 最 後 為 龐 培 所 敗 ， 王 國 亦 於 公 元 前 一 世 紀 末 葉 為 羅 馬 吞 併 。


Irony （ ironical 、 ironically ） 可 以 指 「 反 話 」 ， 也 可 以 指 「 事 情 發 展 與 原 意 相 違 」 ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） He said, with evident irony, that the stupid idea was 烍 ery clever 荂 ] 他 說 那 愚 蠢 的 主 意 「 很 聰 明 」 ， 顯 然 語 帶 嘲 諷 ） 。 （ 2 ） It was ironical that the traffic policeman was caught speeding （ 那 交 通 警 察 被 發 現 超 速 駕 駛 ， 真 是 始 料 不 及 ） 。

台灣民主國：抗拒日本統治的手段

當我們重新思考「台灣民主國」的歷史過往時，一個令人感到存疑的問題則是，一群毫
無民主理念的人，如何會想到要建構一個「民主國」，來凸顯台灣民眾的主體性角色，
以解決當前的困境。基本上，提供這個思考邏輯的一個關鍵性人物，則是當時正在法國
的欽差使臣王之春。正當南洋大臣張之洞以台灣作押向列強借款，或將台灣的礦利、稅
利許以列強，試圖透過台灣的「產權」不明問題，以列強勢力牽制日本，但卻不得要領
之際，王之春乃暗示「中國可援（西）例，聽台灣民自便」。據張之洞在該年四月二十
日發給總理衙門的電文中，曾引述王之春的來電說「西人公論，以普法之戰，普索法之
阿勒撒士（Alsace）及樂阿來那（Lorraine）二省，法不得不應。唯引西例，凡勒佔鄰
土，必視百姓從違，普不能駁；至今二省德、法兩籍相參，財產皆民自立，華可援近案
商倭…」。對於王之春的提案，以援引西人的觀念，建立一個新政府的形式來抗拒日本
的統治，當時的西方觀察家皆不禁感到好奇與驚訝。然而，以唐景崧為首民主國之主要
成員，只是考慮如何可以規避日本的接收，並非真正想要建構一個新政府。因此，這個
號稱是亞洲第一個民主共和國乃如曇花一現般地，瞬間便凋謝殞落了。以後，對於日本
的接收統治，就只能靠台灣民眾以或積極、或消極的模式繼續頑強抗拒。



The Taiwan Republic as a Means against Rule

When we ponder anew the history of the "Taiwan
Republic," we are puzzled by an enigma: how
could a group of people totally unschooled in
the idea of democracy want to establish a
"democratic republic" as a means to accentuate
Taiwan's autonomy and resolve its dilemma? In
answering this question a key may be provided
by Wang Chih-chuen, the Ching court's Imperial
Envoy to France at the time. When Chang Chih-tung,
the Governor-general at Nanking, was borrowing
money from the major world powers with Taiwan as
mortgage, or with "mining concession" and "tax
concession" in Taiwan in Exchange, this flirting
with them with the uncertainty of Taiwan's
"ownership" to curb Japanese ambition; and when
all this was to no avail, it was Wang who suggested
the following: "China should follow western
precedents and let the Taiwanese have what they
want." In a telegraph sent to the Tsungli Yamen
(Office of Foreign Affairs) by Chang on April 20,
Wang was gusted as saying: "It is a consensus in
the west that after the France-Prussian War, France
had to concede to Prussia's annexation of Alsace
and Lorraine. But according to western precedents,
in the process of annexing a neighboring territory,
the willingness of that territory's populace must be
taken into consideration. This is a universal rule.
Till now in Alsace and Lorraine the French and
German peoples have commingled without trouble,
their properties separately and distinctly owned.
China can use this example in dealing with
Japan...." Western observers were surprised by
Wang's utilization of western ideas in the effect
of establishing a new government to counter
Japanese rule. But the principal officials of the
Taiwan Republic headed by Tang were only concerned
about averting Japan's takeover; they were not
really devoted to establishing a new government.
Therefore, the so-called first democratic republic
of Asia was like a flash in the pan, collapsing in
no time. Afterward, in face of Japanese takeover
and colonial rule, all was to depend on Taiwanese
people's continual strong resistance, whether
overt or covert.

always on sunday ： 張 愛 玲 的 「 秀 才 英 文 」  


前 一 陣 子 斷 斷 續 續 的 寫 了 好 幾 篇 以 張 愛 玲 作 品 為 題 的 短 文 ， 其 中 一 篇 說 到 她 從 小 就 立 志 像 林 語 堂 一 樣 ， 做 個 雙 語 作 家 。 董 橋 看 了 ， 來 信 問 ： 「 張 愛 玲 的 英 文 ， 究 竟 有 多 好 ？ 」 他 叫 我 不 妨 就 此 談 一 談 ， 因 為 他 相 信 《 蘋 果 日 報 》 讀 者 有 興 趣 。


我 們 說 某 某 人 的 英 文 好 ， 是 籠 統 的 恭 維 話 。 要 是 對 方 追 問 下 去 ： How good? 你 就 得 舉 些 實 例 說 明 了 。 張 愛 玲 在 太 平 洋 戰 事 爆 發 後 ， 從 香 港 回 到 上 海 ， 開 始 賣 文 為 生 。 她 雙 語 並 用 ， 英 文 稿 的 「 處 女 作 」 "Chinese Life and Fashions" （ 〈 更 衣 記 〉 ） 一 九 四 三 年 發 表 於 The XXth Century （ 〈 二 十 世 紀 〉 ） 。 這 時 她 是 二 十 三 歲 。


一 九 五 二 年 她 抵 達 香 港 ， 次 年 開 始 為 美 國 新 聞 處 繙 譯 美 國 文 學 作 品 。 《 秧 歌 》 （ The Rice-Sprout Song ） 的 中 英 文 版 ， 亦 是 她 「 滯 留 」 香 港 時 期 寫 的 。 英 文 稿 於 一 九 五 五 年 由 美 國 極 負 時 譽 的 Charles Scribner's Sons 出 版 。 張 愛 玲 也 在 這 一 年 「 移 民 」 到 美 國 ， 在 美 國 下 半 生 繼 續 用 雙 語 寫 作 ， 偶 然 亦 「 中 英 互 譯 」 。 她 這 一 段 的 文 字 生 涯 ， 我 另 有 長 文 交 代 ， 這  不 重 複 了 。


張 愛 玲 的 英 文 到 家 ， 照 理 說 也 是 合 該 如 是 。 她 十 一 歲 開 始 即 在 美 國 教 會 辦 的 聖 瑪 利 女 校 就 讀 。 依 胡 辛 在 《 最 後 的 貴 族 ． 張 愛 玲 》 所 說 ， 這 學 校 「 和 所 有 的 教 會 學 校 一 樣 ， 注 重 英 文 ， 輕 視 國 文 。 … … 這 樣 的 學 校 培 養 出 來 的 女 生 ， 英 文 熟 極 而 流 ， 本 國 文 字 卻 連 張 請 假 條 也 貽 笑 大 方 ： 『 某 某 因 病 故 請 假 一 天 』 ？ 」


她 在 香 港 大 學 兩 年 主 修 英 文 。 據 她 弟 弟 張 子 靜 的 記 載 ， 這 一 段 時 間 她 盡 量 避 免 使 用 中 文 。 寫 信 和 做 筆 記 都 用 英 文 。 她 為 參 加 《 西 風 》 雜 誌 徵 文 比 賽 寫 成 的 五 百 字 〈 天 才 夢 〉 ， 是 她 在 香 港 期 間 唯 一 一 次 用 中 文 書 寫 的 作 品 。


張 愛 玲 能 運 用 雙 語 寫 作 ， 但 母 語 是 中 文 。 所 謂 母 語 ， 就 是 一 個 人 在 成 長 時 「 浸 淫 」 在 母 親 的 懷 抱 中 牙 牙 學 來 的 語 言 。 「 浸 淫 」 是 immersion 。 從 孩 提 時 代 聽 的 、 說 的 、 看 的 、 寫 的 都 是 媽 媽 的 語 言 ， 叫 total immersion 。 不 論 她 日 後 花 多 大 的 工 夫 去 學 習 ， 英 文 到 底 是 張 愛 玲 的 「 外 語 」 。


母 語 的 好 處 多 多 。 我 以 前 在 美 國 讀 書 ， 有 時 在 書 本 、 媒 體 、 或 引 車 賣 漿 者 流 那  聽 來 的 一 些 表 述 ， 翻 字 典 查 辭 書 ， 還 是 不 懂 ， 最 後 只 好 請 教 老 美 同 學 。 他 們 也 計 窮 時 ， 會 搔  頭 皮 說 "I don't know, but my gut feeling is … " 。 我 聽  聽  ， 羨 慕 不 已 。 英 語 是 他 們 的 母 語 。 我 書 讀 得 可 能 比 他 們 多 ， 但 在 這 關 頭 上 ， 只 有 他 們 才 有 資 格 說 什 麼 是 來 自 「 腑 肝 的 感 覺 」 。


張 愛 玲 小 時 上 美 國 人 辦 的 學 校 ， 但 下 課 後 回 家 ， 跟 家 人 、 傭 人 和 小 朋 友 說 的 是 中 文 。 在 香 港 兩 年 ， 因 為 她 不 懂 廣 東 話 ， 倒 是 整 天 「 沐 浴 」 在 英 文 氛 圍 的 好 機 會 。 在 美 國 定 居 那 些 日 子 ， 特 別 是 跟 Ferdinand Reyher 婚 後 十 年 ， 她 日 常 使 用 英 文 的 機 會 更 多 。 但 就 學 習 語 言 的 角 度 看 來 ， 人 在 成 年 後 學 到 的 英 文 ， 只 能 說 是 bookish English ， 就 說 是 「 秀 才 英 文 」 吧 。 就 我 看 過 的 張 愛 玲 英 文 書 寫 而 言 ， 說 清 麗 典 雅 可 以 ， 卻 沒 有 到 玩 弄 於 股 掌 之 間 的 地 步 。


喬 志 高 （ 高 克 毅 ） 老 前 輩 的 英 文 可 以 呼 風 喚 雨 ， 可 是 據 他 自 己 的 供 述 ， 屈 指 算 起 數 字 來 ， 一 、 二 、 三 、 四 還 是 比 one, two, three, four 容 易 上 口 。 說 到 Helen 這 女 子 ， 有 時 竟 refer to as "he" 。 而 Tom 變 了 she 。 因 為 George 雖 然 在 美 國 出 生 ， 可 是 小 小 年 紀 就 跟 隨 父 母 返 國 ， 失 掉 了 跟 美 國 小 混 混 撒 野 的 機 會 。


英 文 不 是 張 愛 玲 的 母 語 ， 可 在 「 秀 才 英 文 」 的 書 寫 上 並 不 吃 虧 。 現 在 舉 些 實 例 。 一 九 五 六 年 她 在 美 國 The Reporter 上 發 表 了 短 篇 小 說 "Stale Mates" （ 「 老 搭 子 」 ） 。 後 來 她 把 這 篇 作 品 用 中 文 改 寫 為 〈 五 四 遺 事 〉 ， 一 九 五 八 年 刊 登 於 夏 濟 安 主 編 的 《 文 學 雜 誌 》 。 "Stale Mates" 中 這 段 文 字 相 當 漂 亮 ：


The tea in the cups shone faintly, in each cup a floating silver dish swaying slightly with the movement of the boat. Her face and white-clad shoulders were blue-rimmed with moonlight. It stunned him how she could look just the same when so much had happened.


張 愛 玲 跟 我 們 說 過 ， 〈 五 四 遺 事 〉 講 的 ， 雖 然 是 ： "Stale Mates" 同 樣 的 故 事 ， 但 表 現 手 法 「 略 有 出 入 」 ， 有 些 段 落 是 改 寫 了 。 上 面 一 段 引 文 ， 剛 好 沒 有 什 麼 改 動 ， 不 妨 錄 下 做 參 考 ， 或 可 加 深 我 們 對 張 愛 玲 「 秀 才 英 文 」 的 認 識 。


玻 璃 杯  的 茶 微 微 發 光 ， 每 一 杯 的 水 面 都 是 一 個 銀 色 圖 片 ， 隨  船 身 的 晃 動 輕 輕 的 搖 擺  。 她 的 臉 與 白 衣 的 肩 膀 被 月 光 鍍 上 一 道 藍 邊 。 人 事 的 變 化 這 樣 多 ， 而 她 竟 和 從 前 一 模 一 樣 ， 一 點 也 沒 有 改 變 ， 這 使 她 無 論 如 何 想 不 明 白 ， 心  只 覺 得 恍 惚 。


「 秀 才 英 文 」 就 是 把 話 說 得 規 規 矩 矩 ， 說 某 某 有 錢 不 是 說 rich 就 是 wealthy ， 不 會 說 成 with deep pockets 或 loaded （ with money ） 的 。 因 此 按 道 理 說 ， 張 愛 玲 的 英 文 ， 如 果 僅 用 於  事 ， 不 會 吃 甚 麼 「 虧 」 。 看 她 的 英 文 著 作 或 繙 譯 自 己 的 作 品 ， 感 覺 到 她 偶 然 力 不 從 心 的 地 方 ， 是 小 說 人 物 的 對 白 。 有 時 話 說 得 太 一 板 一 眼 了 。 在 美 國 以 Waiting （ 《 等 待 》 ） 一 書 成 名 的 Ha Jin （ 哈 金 ） ， 用 並 非 母 語 的 英 文 寫 作 ， 在 這 方 面 也 像 張 愛 玲 一 樣 的 「 捉 襟 見 肘 」 。 我 在 〈 輪 迴 轉 生 ： 張 愛 玲 的 中 英 互 譯 〉 一 文 有 詳 細 的 交 代 ， 這  不 多 說 了 。


張 愛 玲 的 英 文 有 多 好 ？ 她 只 有 在 營 造 小 說 的 dialogue 時 才 露 出 「 馬 腳 」 ？ 要 回 答 這 問 題 ， 又 得 舉 些 實 例 。 也 許 我 該 趁 此 機 會 說 明 ， 我 的 母 語 是 中 文 。 英 文 是 我 成 年 後 自 修 學 來 的 ， 因 此 說 的 、 寫 的 全 是 「 秀 才 英 文 」 。 「 昨 晚 我 們 玩 得 多 開 心 」 ， 我 只 會 規 規 矩 矩 的 說 Didn't we have a good time last night ？ 絕 不 敢 放 肆 說 Ain't we got fun last night ？


另 外 一 點 要 說 明 的 是 ， 英 語 是 母 語 的 人 寫 出 來 的 英 文 ， 不 一 定 是 「 好 」 英 文 。 這 道 理 太 顯 淺 了 ， 正 如 從 小 在 中 文 母 語 環 境 長 大 的 人 不 一 定 能 寫 「 好 」 的 中 文 道 理 一 樣 。 除 了 dialogue 外 ， 張 愛 玲 的 「  事 英 文 」 亦 偶 見 沙 石 ， 而 這 些 失 誤 ， 與 作 者 書 寫 的 語 言 是 否 mother tongue 無 絕 對 關 係 。 我 們 且 以 「 吹 毛 求 疵 」 的 眼 光 看 看 這 句 出 自 "Stale Mates" 的 引 文 ： Lo got a lawyer to write his wife an alarmingly worded request for divorce 。 〈 五 四 遺 事 〉 中 相 對 的 中 文 是 ： 羅 請 律 師 寫 了 封 措 辭 嚴 厲 的 信 給 他 妻 子 。


如 果 不 是 執 意 要 在 雞 蛋  挑 骨 頭 ， 那 麼 我 們 可 以 說 這 句 英 文 沒 有 什 麼 問 題 。 但 仔 細 分 析 起 來 ， alarmingly worded request 實 有 商 榷 餘 地 。 Request 是 客 氣 用 語 。 我 們 恭 請 某 某 名 流 到 什 麼 場 合 光 臨 指 導 ， 是 request the honor of 。 既 然 律 師 發 的 信 是 alarmingly worded ， 令 對 方 「 心 驚 膽 跳 」 ， 語 氣 一 定 像 稅 務 局 對 不 法 之 徒 追 討 欠 款 一 樣 不 留 情 面 ， 因 此 不 能 視 為 request 。 另 一 個 可 視 為 「 沙 石 」 的 地 方 是 usage 的 差 異 。 Alarmingly worded 沒 有 什 麼 不 對 ， 但 聽 來 有 點 不 自 然 ， 怪 怪 的 。 我 想 換 作 harshly worded 或 harshly phrased 比 較 合 乎 英 文 習 慣 。


今 年 五 月 號 的 《 印 刻 文 學 生 活 誌 》 （ INK Literary Monthly ） 有 高 全 之 〈 張 愛 玲 的 英 文 自 白 〉 一 文 。 〈 自 白 〉 就 是 張 愛 玲 為 美 國 The H.W. Wilson 出 版 的 World Authors 1950-70, A Companion Volume to Twentieth-Century Authors 一 書 提 供 的 自 傳 。 高 全 之 說 ， 此 書 的 編 者 「 鄭 重 申 明 ： 只 要 作 家 用 英 文 寫 自 述 ， 編 者 完 全 尊 重 而 不 事 更 改 。 」 刊 登 出 來 的 〈 自 白 〉 ， 因 此 是 張 愛 玲 親 筆 寫 的 英 文 。 我 們 不 妨 繼 續 以 「 吹 毛 求 疵 」 的 心 情 研 究 一 下 張 愛 玲 的 「 實 用 英 文 」 ：


I went to a large Episcopalian school for girls for six years and discovered that my family was not as different as I had thought, if more extreme. ... I was going to London University over my father's objections but was prevented by the Second World War.


我 用 underline 勾 出 兩 處 我 認 為 有 問 題 的 地 方 。 熟 悉 張 愛 玲 家 庭 背 景 的 讀 者 ， 知 道 她 父 親 嫖 賭 飲 蕩 吹 之 外 ， 還 會 動 粗 打 人 ； 知 道 她 母 親 是 婦 運 先 驅 ， 是 個 跟 丈 夫 一 言 不 合 就 隻 身 跑 天 涯 的 剛 毅 女 子 。 知 道 這 種 背 景 的 讀 者 一 看 if more extreme 就 會 明 白 張 愛 玲 要 講 的 是 什 麼 。 不 明 所 以 的 讀 者 ， 對 她 的 家 庭 狀 態 ， 只 好 胡 亂 猜 想 ， 以 為 她 說 的 extreme 是 政 治 上 的 radical ， 或 行 為 上 的 eccentric ， 是 愛 「 捫 虱 而 談 」 那 類 怪 人 。 我 想 在 這 種 情 形 下 ， 張 愛 玲 如 把 句 子 改 為 if only more unconventional 會 比 較 說 得 過 去 。


她 因 歐 戰 爆 發 上 不 了 倫 敦 大 學 。 I was going to London University over my father's objections but was prevented by the Second World War 是 一 句 incomplete sentence 。 意 思 當 然 清 楚 。 用 高 全 之 的 譯 文 說 ： 「 如 非 第 二 次 世 界 大 戰 爆 發 ， 我 會 罔 顧 父 親 反 對 而 前 往 倫 敦 大 學 就 讀 。 」 但 英 文 讀 者 會 問 ： who 或 what is prevented by the Second World War ？ 這 句 話 ， 如 作 以 下 的 修 改 會 比 較 合 英 文 規 矩 ： I was going to London University over my father's objections but my plan was foiled by the outbreak of the Second World War.
英 諺 有 言 ， even Homer nods 。 荷 馬 也 有 打 盹 的 剎 那 。 張 愛 玲 的 英 文 好 不 好 ？ 好 ， 但 也 有 措 手 不 及 的 時 候 。
